How much does a funeral cost in the UK?

Every funeral director in the UK has to publish their prices, in the same set format. We collect those lists and show you what funerals really cost, area by area. It is free to use, and we never charge you or take a cut.

Last updated October 2026. Based on 4,549 published attended-funeral prices and 4,343 direct-cremation prices, taken from funeral directors' own price lists.

Typical attended funeral £3,450
Typical direct cremation £1,545

The attended-funeral figure covers the funeral director's own charges plus a typical crematorium fee. Direct cremation already includes the cremation fee. A burial plot, doctors' or minister's fees and a wake all cost extra.

“Typical” means the middle price. Half the directors charge more than it and half charge less. That is fairer than an average, which one very expensive firm can pull out of shape. “—” means we don't have enough checked prices in that area yet. We need at least four.

How we work this out

Since 2021, every UK funeral director must publish a Standardised Price List. The format is set by the Competition and Markets Authority, the government body that watches over fair competition. Here is how those lists become the figures above.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a funeral cost in the UK?

A traditional funeral with a service costs around £2,500–£3,000 in the funeral director's own charges. On top of that you pay the crematorium or the burial ground. A direct cremation — no service, no mourners — is far cheaper, usually £1,200–£1,800, and that already includes the cremation fee. Two firms in the same town can charge very different amounts, so it is worth comparing.

Why do funeral prices vary so much?

Funeral directors set their own charges. There is no standard price. In one area, the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is often more than £1,000 for the same service. That is why it pays to put the published price lists side by side.

What is included in the price you show?

For a funeral with a service, our figure is the funeral director's own charges plus a typical crematorium fee. Direct-cremation prices already include the cremation fee. Anything else is extra and varies locally: a burial plot, doctors' or minister's fees, and a wake.

Is direct cremation cheaper than an attended funeral?

Yes, by a long way. A direct cremation has no service and no mourners, so it avoids most of the cost of a full funeral: usually £1,200–£1,800, against £2,500–£3,000 or more for the director's charges on a funeral with a service.

How do you work out these figures?

Every figure here comes from real prices that funeral directors publish themselves, in the standard format the Competition and Markets Authority requires. We read them automatically, check them for mistakes, and only show a figure for an area once we hold at least four prices we have checked.
