Frequently asked questions

Is it free to use?

Yes, it is free for families. We don't charge you to search or compare. You pay the funeral director directly, at their own published price. We never add a markup.

Where do your prices come from?

Since 2021, every UK funeral director must publish a price list in the same set format. The format is set by the Competition and Markets Authority, the government body that watches over fair competition. We collect those lists and show the main figures, so they are easy to compare.

How do you verify the prices?

We read each funeral director's own published price list and pull the figures out of it. Automated checks then look for obvious mistakes. A price is only shown once it passes those checks. If it doesn't, we mark it 'price being verified' instead.

What is a direct cremation?

A direct cremation is a cremation with no service and no mourners there. It is the simplest and cheapest option. The funeral director collects and cares for the person, and the ashes are returned to the family afterwards.

What's an attended funeral?

This is the traditional option. Family and friends gather for a service at the time of the burial or cremation. The price we show covers the funeral director's own charges plus a typical cremation fee.

Do I have to use a funeral director?

No. In England and Wales you can arrange a funeral yourself. Most families use a funeral director for support, and to handle the practical and legal side.

How do the reviews work?

Ratings and review snippets come from Google and reflect the views of their authors, not us. We show them alongside prices so you can weigh reputation as well as cost.

Can a funeral director update their listing?

Yes. If you run a funeral home and want your details or prices updated, email us at fairfuneralsuk@gmail.com and we'll put it right.

How much does a funeral cost in the UK?

A traditional funeral with a service costs around £2,500–£3,000 in the funeral director's own charges. On top of that you pay the crematorium or the burial ground. A direct cremation is far cheaper, usually £1,200–£1,800, and that already includes the cremation fee. Our funeral cost page shows typical prices for your area.

Why do prices vary so much between funeral directors?

Funeral directors set their own charges, and there is no fixed national price. In one town, the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is often more than £1,000 for the same service. That is why it is worth putting the published price lists side by side.

What extra costs should I budget for?

On top of the funeral director's charges there are fees you cannot avoid. The main one is the cremation or burial fee. There may also be fees for a doctor, a minister or a celebrant. Anything you choose to add costs more: flowers, a wake, an order of service, a memorial. The figure we show for a funeral with a service already includes a typical cremation fee.

Is there help available if I can't afford a funeral?

You may be able to get a Funeral Expenses Payment from the government, if you receive certain benefits. Some councils also offer a Public Health Funeral where there is no one else to arrange it. Our guide on help paying for a funeral explains the options.
